Heating with Solid Fuels. A Unit of Instruction.

Designed for use in industrial education programs at the secondary school level, this unit focuses on residential space heating although applications can be made to commercial settings. Wood heat is emphasized but coal-fired appliances and other energy sources are considered. Educational objectives with instructional strategies are provided for each of the eight major concepts addressed. These concept areas include: (1) fuels; (2) solid fuel heating appliance design; (3) chimneys and flues; (4) safety regulations; (5) solid fuel appliance installation; (6) heating system management and maintenance; (7) occupations; and (8) environmental considerations. A basic competency profile chart and checklist is provided for the addressed skill areas. The bibliographic section contains sources of publications, media, and 20 transparency masters. (ML)
