When Good Will Isn't Enough. Prejudice and Racism: Reactions to a Multicultural Unit on Alaska Native Land Claims.
Fenton, Ray; Nancarrow, Douglas
Failure to take into account the need to train teachers to deal with prejudicial statements and negative racial attitudes contributed to the failure of a 2-week unit on Alaska Native Land Claims designed for inclusion in an 11th grade American Government course in the Anchorage (Alaska) School District. The unit--recommended by a parent group and supported by the superintendent and board of education--was developed jointly by a teacher expert in Alaska history and the Indian Education Program Curriculum specialist in consultation with various Alaska Native groups and curriculum committees. Evaluations of the unit showed that it met its goal of increasing student knowledge, but students' prejudiced reactions reported by teachers indicated the need for further review of the unit. The unit review showed, first, that education is not neutral and value free. Any lessons about current culture and current events which are tied to cultural differences will involve the racial attitudes that exist in the society. The probable behaviors of students must be considered and teachers must be prepared to deal with prejudicial statements. Second, a quick way to fail to integrate multicultural materials into the curriculum is to mandate that the materials be used without working closely with teachers. (JHZ)
