An Overview of Comparative and International Perspectives of Early Childhood Education in Six Selected Countries: An Annotated Bibliography.

The primary aim of this annotated bibliography is to collect resources for those interested in acquiring a broad, cross-cultural understanding of early childhood education. Chapter I provides an overview of comparative and international perspectives of early childhood education. Subsequent chapters focus on aspects of early childhood education in China, England, India, Israel, Scandinavia, and the USSR. Materials were selected for inclusion when they addressed the following topics: (1) the development of early childhood education; (2) factors affecting such development; (3) aspects pertaining to the organization, administration, financing, facilities, delivery systems, and availability of preschool programs; (4) curriculum trends and practices; (5) group or institutional child-rearing practices; (6) provision for teacher training and training of personnel for early childhood programs; (7) early childhood program evaluation; and (8) trends in current research. While coverage throughout is not comprehensive, it is expected that readers will be exposed to a number of prevalent theoretical and practical variables that seem to underlie differences and, of particular importance, similarities among diverse nations' programs for young children.
