Language Center Program Evaluation, 1984-1985.
Sierra, Rita
Fort Worth's Language Center programs offer intensive instruction in English and in social studies to limited-English-speaking students from grades 6-12 in five middle schools and four high schools. The program's objective is to bring the students' English language proficiency to a level enabling them to compete academically in a less sheltered school curriculum. Evaluation of student standardized test results and other measures of student achievement for 1984-85 showed that students made progress in learning English in this English as a second language (ESL) program. In addition, principals were very supportive of the program, and teachers used the program materials and methodologies and articulated program objectives and guidelines. Recommendations for change include: (1) expansion of the middle school program to include science, (2) examination of the ninth grade reading program, and (3) expansion of the high school program to include mathematics.
