This sourcebook provides information for educators and community leaders involved in dropout prevention planning. Section A deals with general reports and literature reviews; overviews of the dropout problem are presented from a wide range of publications. Section B, on research studies and organizations, lists solutions to the dropout problem. Section C summarizes the costs and consequences of high dropout rates; methodologies are given for calculating the repercussions of large numbers of dropouts. Section D is on clearinghouses and networks; five networks offer information, training, and referral. Section E, on resources for minorities, lists organizations working with minority students toward dropout prevention. Section F, on demonstration projects and strategies, contains summaries of program descriptions and analyses. Section G tells of school/business collaboration and outlines programs that link school to work. Other noteworthy programs, such as peer counseling, are presented in section H. Films and videotapes useful for local programs are reviewed in section I. Section J presents typical state programs and legislation. Section K, entitled "Still Unsure about How To Count?" includes reports on national dropout statistics, methods of calculating statistics, and standardizing procedures.
