Language Arts Curriculum.
Idaho School District 241, Grangeville.
Prepared to provide direction, help develop instructional units, define skills and concept developments needed for new tasks, coordinate district language arts programs, and disseminate information to other professionals, this guide presents a kindergarten through grade 12 language arts curriculum. A foreword lists the guide's goals, and a philosophy statement specifies the components of language arts, defining it as the art of using one's language to the greatest possible extent to communicate thoughts, facts, and ideas about one's environment. Chapters on each grade from kindergarten through grade six present goals and objectives for each of the language arts components: (1) oral communication (listening and speaking skills), (2) written composition, (3) language (mechanics and usage), (4) spelling and vocabulary, (5) library skills, and (6) literature. Two sample writing process models are then listed side by side, and a selective reading list for grades one through six is provided. Next are a chapter combining goals and objectives for seventh and eighth grades, the sample writing process models again, and a seventh and eighth grade reading list. Chapters on ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades are followed by the writing process samples and another reading list. A speech communication section for grades 9 through 12 explains the philosophy of speech communication and lays out goals and objectives for: understanding the communication process, one-to-one communication, group discussion, public speaking, and mass communication. A summary table lists language arts skills with appropriate grades for first exposure, explicit instruction and maintenance of each skill. (SKC)
