Working with Refugees. Proceedings of the Simon S. Shargo Memorial Conference (Northampton, Massachusetts, March 1, 1983).
Rose, Peter I., Ed.
This book contains a transcript of discussions at a 1983 conference held at Smith College (Massachusetts) for refugee workers. Included are presentations by official representatives of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, foreign service officers, administrators of key voluntary agencies, immigration lawyers, social workers, case managers, volunteers, and several academic specialists. Major themes discussed include: the protection and assistance of refugees; the rules governing their selection for relocation and the means by which they are to be admitted to "third countries" such as the United States; the problems inherent in learning to adapt to a new society; and the ways services to refugees might be improved. Following a brief introduction and a list of participants, the book is divided into the following eight chapters: (1) The Uprooted; (2) Protection and Assistance; (3) Selection and Admission; (4) Resettlement; (5) Problems of Acculturation; (6) The Meaning of Voluntarism; (7) Improving Services for Refugees; and (8) a summation, entitled Retrospect and Prospect.
