Commonwealth Futures: Final Report on the Six Month Planning Grant, July 1-December 31, 1986.
Massachusetts Governor's Office of Educational Affairs, Boston.
This paper describes the first six months of activities and accomplishments of Commonwealth Futures, an initiative designed to provide services to at-risk youth in Massachusetts schools. Major activities are outlined chronologically, implementation problems and successes are briefly discussed, and projected future activities are listed. These outcomes were identified: (1) an interagency Steering Committee and Work Group were established to advise and assist the project; (2) 24 communities were identified and invited to participate in a conference and program application process; (3) six communities were selected to attend an Institute and begin a comprehensive local planning process; (4) an interagency RFP/Comprehensive Plan format was developed; and (5) initial local planning was completed, resulting in the submission of comprehensive community plans which will be funded with $495,000 in reallocated State funds beginning January 1, 1987. The report concluded that Commonwealth Futures shows promise of being an ideal vehicle for developing new levels of interagency coordination and cooperation. On the local level, Futures has raised awareness of the dropout issue and has encouraged development of communication between communities. (KH)
