van den Berg-Eldering, Lotty
This report summarizes the proceedings of the final conference of Project No. 7 to develop an inter-cultural approach to the education of migrants. An introductory section outlines conference aims and remarks by opening/closing speakers. Section II describes conference visits to schools in Rotterdam and an adult education project and a center for minority women in Tilburg. Section III reports comments by an Israli education expert and a panel representing the European Economic Community, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and UNESCO. Section IV details the Project's aims, guiding principles, methods, underlying changes in migration and society in Europe and their educational and cultural implications, realities and important unifying trends, future trends in the migration context, and project group proposals for follow-up to Project No. 7. Section V presents discussion of issues of multi-cultural versus inter-cultural, fundamental values and social cohesion in society, communication between groups and societies, full participation of ethnic minority women, and new sub-groups and cites working group recommendations for a balance between action and research, dissemination and exchange of information, and co-operation and co-ordination. Section VI offers general conclusions of the rapporteur. Appendices contain proposed amendments/additions to the group's final report, a list of 40 project documents, and names/addresses of the more than 75 conference participants. (NEC)
