Bridging the Gap Between Generations: An Intergenerational Program Between a Public School, Senior Center and Two Private Nursing Facilities.
Gundling, Robert
Because no program existed in the Pottstown, Pennsylvania area which allowed children and senior citizens to interact in mutually beneficial ways, a practicum was designed to implement an intergenerational program in an elementary school attended by 540 students in grades K through 5. The intervention consisted of monthly meetings with volunteers, telephone conferences between students and seniors, a pen pal program involving a second grade class and seniors who were unable to come to the school, and a storytelling hour for 4-year-old preschoolers which was conducted weekly by two senior citizens. Additionally, teachers and students visited the participating nursing home and senior center, and seniors brought handcrafted items and baked goods to the children. Volunteers were 10 senior center residents and 25 nursing home residents, who came to the school once a week and twice a month, respectively. Participants' reports suggest that the intergenerational program had positive effects on everyone involved. Related materials are appended. (RH)
