Developing Thinking Skills in Young Children: Teacher/Assistant Teacher Staff Development Materials.
Cliatt, Mary Jo; Shaw, Jean M.
This manual contains materials for seven workshops on developing thinking skills in young children for teachers and teacher assistants in kindergarten through third grade. Contents of workshop (W) material focus, respectively, on (W1) convergent and divergent thinking; (W2) Bloom's levels of thinking; (W3) decision making, concept development, and problem solving; (W4) general questioning and evaluation strategies; (W5) using thinking skills in language arts; (W6) using thinking skills in mathematics; and (W7) using thinking skills in science and social studies. Workshops 1 through 4 could be used independently or presented in any order with slight modifications in introductory sections. Workshops 5 through 7 must be presented after workshops 1 through 4, because their content depends on ideas developed in the first four workshops. Workshops 5 through 7 could be presented in any order. Written materials for each workshop include an outline of steps to follow when presenting the workshops, lists of materials and steps to follow in getting ready for the workshops, an overview of what participants are expected to do, and a guide for the presenter on what to say and do. The guide includes a narrative, as well as transparency and handout masters. (RH)
