Staff Training for Automation in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 109.
Wilding, Tom
Based on the results of a June 1984 survey of 30 Association of Research Library (ARL) member libraries, this kit contains documents related to automation training programs for ARL library staff members. A summary of survey results indicates that few libraries performed formal needs assessments before embarking on programs related to automation training; 14 libraries are planning or have already implemented plans to provide basic training in automation; and only one library in which a specific automated system has been installed requires training for all staff members. The survey form is provided, and the following documents are included: (1) policies and program plans from the University of California at San Diego, Emory University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Missouri, and Stanford University; (2) needs assessments from the University of Missouri and Massachusetts Institute of Technology; (3) staff development program announcements and descriptions from New York University, the University of Tennessee, Emory University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and (4) staff training and trainers' manuals from New York University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of Texas, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An eight-item bibliography and an ARI Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit evaluation form are also provided. (KM)
