This collection of documentation from library materials cost studies conducted by members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries in the United States and Canada contains 11 documents divided into the following sections: (1) methodologies and data collection worksheets from the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Chicago, Colorado State University, and Indiana University; (2) budget-related documents from Stanford University, the University of Minnesota, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and the University of Western Ontario; and (3) analysis of economic trends by Princeton University, the University of Michigan, and Stanford University. A concise summary of related issues and trends discusses the utilization of local cost data versus published data found in the "Bowker Annual,""Library Journal," and other sources; characteristics of local cost studies; and the concerns involved in the systematic collection and efficient use of standardized data on cost of materials on the international, national, and local levels. An evaluation sheet for this ARL Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit is also provided. (KM)
