Decisions: A Process for Screening Educational Problems in the Classroom. Participant Workbook.
Halseth, Susan L.
This workbook was developed for an inservice workshop to assist regular education teachers and others in screening and making more appropriate referrals for suspected learning disabilities. The first part of the workbook consists of a series of topic papers that form the theoretical base of the decision-making process used in the workbook for screening education problems. These papers cover introductory material on decisions, rationale for screening, teaching assistance teams, learning disabilities, expectations, and match-mismatch of performance and expectations. Following an overview of the decision process, a series of worksheets are provided to assist teachers in: (1) identifying their own expectations for student performance behavior; (2) comparing those expectations to what the students are doing; (3) asking and answering questions that help to zero in on the problem(s); (4) identifying factors that may be contributing to the problem(s); (5) collecting and analyzing data; (6) deciding on alternatives; and (7) planning classroom intervention strategies. An extensive annotated list of resource materials is also provided, along with the Wisconsin state rules for the identification of children as learning disabled. (KM)
