Chapter 74 Vocational Education Programs in Massachusetts: Results from a Survey of 1983/84 Graduates and Their Employers. Final Report.
Schneider, Glen; And Others
A follow-up study of 1983/1984 graduates of Chapter 74 vocational education programs had two primary components. The graduate survey examined employment and education progress of vocational students at a point well after graduation. It measured graduates' labor force and wage status, employment stability and wage growth, and perceptions of training received. Over 1,200 graduates were interviewed by telephone. A mail survey of 440 employers who directly supervise vocational education graduates measured overall satisfaction with vocational graduates, measured employers' perception of graduates' academic and technical preparation, and compared graduates' and employers' perceptions along some related dimensions. Results indicated Massachusetts vocational high schools are highly successful in preparing their students for the labor force. The majority made a successful transition to the job market and earn competitive wages. Approximately 1 in 10 graduates was enrolled in a postsecondary program. Overall, both employers and graduates expressed positive opinions about vocational education. Findings suggested these issues of concern to vocational education administrators and policymakers: the comparative wage disadvantage of female graduates in the labor market, less positive ratings of academic preparation than of technical training by employers and students, and some discrepancy between employers' and graduates' perceptions of work habits and work quality. (Appendixes include a technical analysis of wage variation, sample selection and data collection methodology, and instruments.) (YLB)
