Vocational Technical Advisory Committees. A Guide to Effective Utilization.
Education Development Center, Inc., Newton, MA.
This guide outlines the methods for organizing and using vocational technical advisory committees in secondary schools in Massachusetts. It is intended to be used as the basis for school staff training to be conducted by personnel at the State Department of Education's Regional Education Centers. The guide provides illustrations and exhibits of effective practices that exist in the state and stresses three necessary components of the use of advisory committees: (1) the involvement of school staff throughout the process; (2) written response by the school to the committee's recommendations; and (3) independent functioning of the committee. The guide is organized in seven sections. The first two sections state the law and regulations regarding the use of advisory committees and provide a mission statement. The third section explains the role of advisory committees, while the next section outlines the structural features of advisory committees. How to recruit advisory committee members is the topic of the next section, followed by a section on organizing advisory committee meetings. The final section focuses on evaluation of committee effectiveness and correcting problems. Extensive exhibits illustrate the concepts discussed in the guide. The appendix provides a survey form for members or former members of vocational advisory committees. (KC)
