English Instructional Services: Site-By-Site Results, 1984-1985. OEA Evaluation Report.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn. Office of Educational Assessment.
This summary provides data on program results for students who participated in New York City's English Instructional Services (EIS) program during the 1984-85 academic year. Approximately 61,000 students from 108 high schools received reading and/or writing instruction during that school year. The report includes: (1) an introduction with information on program objectives and tests used to evaluate students progress; and (2) tables giving the number of students who participated at each school, their attendance, and their reading and writing test results by school and by grade. The objective of the program was to achieve improvement greater than the expected improvement without the program. Of the full-year students, 52 percent met that objective. The objective for half-year students was that they should master one skill on the criterion-referenced tests (CRTs) for every 20 days of instruction. About 85 percent of the half- year students met that objective. The evaluation objective in writing stipulated that students should show writing improvement from their first to their final writing sample. Approximately 80 percent of full- and half-time students met that objective. (PS)
