Visual Arts: A Guide to Curriculum Development in the Arts.
Iowa State Dept. of Public Instruction, Des Moines.
This visual arts curriculum guide was developed as a subset of a model curriculum for the arts as mandated by the Iowa legislature. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the Visual Arts in Iowa Schools (VAIS). The guide is divided into six sections: Sections one and two contain the preface, acknowledgements, and a list of members of the arts curriculum coordinating committee. Section three, "Rationale/Philosophy/Goals," presents rationale specifics, a multicultural nonsexist approach to art education, and discusses VAIS as a guide for exceptional student classes. Also included are suggestions for visiting artist programs and curriculum aims and goals which act as guidelines for visual arts education. Section four, "Scope and Sequence Strategies," is patterned on the aims, goals and objectives of VAIS. The curriculum aims describe the activities of the art teacher. Student goals and objectives are arranged according to three levels of increasing complexity. Level one provides objectives for students with little art experience. Level two provides objectives for students with intermediate art skills and level three objectives are designed for students with a variety of art experiences. Nine teaching strategy lessons for elementary and secondary grades are also included in this section. Section five, "Evaluation," looks at the evaluation portion of VAIS. Student evaluation, teacher self-evaluation, unit and individual activity evaluation, and program evaluation procedures are outlined. Section six, "Appendices," consists of bibliographies which include Art Education and Curriculum Resources, Art History/Art Criticism Books, Specific Skills Idea Books, Multicultural/Nonsexist Resources, and Resources for Women in Art.
