Designed for school-age child care staff training, this package of materials aims to (1) increase understanding of the developmental needs of school-age children between 5 and 12 years of age; (2) provide information on developing safe, supportive, and enriching programs for children during the hours they are not in school; and (3) involve staff in activities designed to apply new information and enhance skills. The package contains 40 short papers divided among four training modules each containing some or all of the following: a list of general references, a discussion guide, a set of activities, and a list of further readings. Focusing on the school-age child, Module 1 includes units on the latchkey child, developmental needs of children, and the stress of childhood. Concerning the school-age child care leader, Module 2 provides units focusing on the leader, on working with children, and the curriculum. Module 3 centers on the family and includes units on the American family, parent-community relations, and parent participation in school-age child care. Module 4, in dealing with administration, describes the administrator, how to manage the program, and day-to-day program operation. The training package may be used alone or in conjunction with a supplementary half-inch videotape consisting of observations of children, leaders and programs, and interviews with parents and administrators.
