Postsecondary options for hard of hearing and deaf students are identified, and practical suggestions are offered for students, faculty, and service providers. In addition to providing facts about hearing loss and the effects of age of onset of hearing loss, information is provided on communication methods, special support services, and resources. Students have three environments to consider: the two federally supported national schools (Gallaudet College and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf), a separate (special) program for hearing impaired students on the regular college campus, and a mainstreamed program in a setting with mostly hearing students. The Individual Written Rehabilitation Plan is available for students in the mainstream who are clients of the State Vocational Rehabilitation program. Special support services include: interpreters, notetakers/tutors, special communications equipment, and remedial reading and writing programs. Since social concerns are also important, suggestions are offered to both students and instructors to promote acceptance and support for hearing impaired students outside of the classroom (e.g., in the cafeteria, gym, and residence hall).
