Educational Transitions into the Community: Guidebook.
Pawelski, Christine E., Ed.
Designed for small-group inservice training at a Connecticut state school, the working manual offers a philosophical framework and a collection of practical ideas and techniques for educators working with severely disabled, multihandicapped persons toward the ultimate goal of community integration. Chapters have the following titles and emphases: (1) "Philosophical Considerations" focusing on development of functional skills in normalized settings; (2) "Transdisciplinary Focus" (including roles and responsibilities of transdisciplinary team members); (3) "Ecological Inventories" (identifying domains, environments, subenvironments, activities, and skills); (4) "Standard Operating Procedures" (natural learning environments, organizing student information in notebooks, classroom calendars, communication with parents and professionals, schedules, personalization of the environment); (5) "Instructional Components" (writing functional objectives; task analysis, shaping, prompting, fading, behavior management issues); and (6) "Model Program." The final chapter, "Testing Your Knowledge," consists of questions reviewing the concepts and procedures described in the manual. Four appendices, comprising nearly one-third of the document, include definitions of terms, a listing of 12 prerequisite readings and 23 additional references, and 20 sample forms. (JW)
