Determination of the Effectiveness of the Delivery and Content of the Human Relations Course and Technical Updates for Post-Secondary, Full-Time Preparatory Program Instructors in the State of Iowa.
Shepard, Delbert A.; Mitchell, Robert A.
A study assessed the effectiveness of the delivery and content of the Human Relations course and the technical updating activities for postsecondary, full-time preparatory program instructors in Iowa. Faculty members from 15 community and technical colleges were asked to identify how necessary they feel each competency is to the teaching process, to assess the level of attainment of competencies contained in the human relations course, and to indicate to what extent they are currently able to apply the competencies to their classroom situation. Findings indicated a need to look more closely at emphasis placed on certain competencies in the course. While most respondents expressed concern about being required to take the course, they felt the course is necessary. Results also indicated strong use of the competencies. The instructors failed to demonstrate an understanding of the vocational-technical teaching field of the community college teaching faculty. Technical update activities delivered by or available from business and industry rated higher in effectiveness than in appeal. Ninety percent of respondents indicated technical updating should be required in the teaching field. Over half found it important that paid release time be available for technical updating. Eight recommendations are offered and the survey instrument is appended. (YLB)
