The Supervisor and the Organised Worker. The Supervisor's "Self-Development" Series 4.
Corfield, Tony
This guide, which is intended for new supervisors and managers to use in an independent study setting, deals with maintaining working relations with organized labor. The following topics are discussed in the individual sections: good personal relations (psychological aspects, wages and job security, a good working environment, techniques for developing an interest in the job, methods of introducing new employees, and procedures for settling workers' grievances); ways of dealing with workers collectively (relations with trade unions and shop stewards, work discipline, procedures for bargaining over working terms and conditions, facilities for trade union activities, and ground rules for workplace regulations); workers and the law (ways of tackling a legal problem, sources of official legal information, three management functions that are closely affected by the law (hiring and firing employees and maintaining health and safety at work); and communications (the need to communicate, communication techniques, interviewing techniques, consultations, and strategies for giving instructions). Checklists and exercises are provided in each chapter. The qualities of effective supervision are reviewed in a concluding chapter. Appendixes contain information on welfare legislation, the judicial structure in Britain, and guides to employment law. (MN)
