In Charge. A Supervisor's Note Book. The Supervisor's "Self-Development" Series 1.
Rabey, Gordon P.
This guide, which is intended for new supervisors and managers to use in an independent study setting, deals with the responsibilities of being in charge. The following topics are discussed in the first three sections: the supervisor and the job; procedures for planning and organizing work; and getting the work done (allocation of work, work flows, controls, ways of improving work methods, and records and reports). The third chapter, which is devoted to developing a team, deals with training (recruiting, introducing, and training new workers and developing people for growth and promotion) and getting along with people at work (understanding what makes people work well, giving instructions or orders, handling complaints and grievances, maintaining discipline, working with people of other cultures, communicating effectively, and managing change). The final two sections cover safety at the workplace and self-development for supervisors (deciding to begin a plan of self-improvement, opting to be a boss or a leader, managing one's time, and making decisions). A note to managers regarding supervisory training is appended. (MN)
