Enhancing the Effectiveness of Cooperating Teachers.
Abel, Frederick J.; And Others
The area of concern addressed in this paper was the effectiveness of the cooperating teacher in the student teaching process. It was felt that the cooperating teachers were not providing enough formal observational feedback to student teachers in the area of methodology. This paper describes a workshop to respond to that stated concern. It was designed to be a one credit, field-based course which could be carried to cooperating teachers using a Friday evening and all day Saturday format. The outcome was to have cooperating teachers understand how the student teaching experience could be a culmination of the knowledge and skills learned during the years spent in teacher preparation. Components of the workshop included research findings on effective teaching, designing and using an observation instrument, conferencing and feedback and a series of idea exchanges. It is our hope that, in the future, only those teachers who have completed the workshop will be allowed to work with our student teachers. It will serve as a basis for certification of cooperating teachers. (Author)
