Many students in standard college preparatory programs are not reaching their potential levels of achievement. The purpose of this study is to determine the need for and possible content of a course for improving the academic performance of these students. The study was conducted in the spring of 1986 at Marshfield High School, Massachusetts. Information about student study habits, skills, and attitudes was gathered from surveys completed by 110 students (50 freshmen, 30 sophomores, and 30 juniors), their parents or guardians, and 48 school staff members. Results show that the time students spend on homework is only 40.8 percent of what their teachers feel is assigned; that a large majority of students (81.9 percent) and parents (95.5 percent) want study habits and skills improved; and that a course in study and time management skills is wanted by 56.9 percent of the students and 81.5 percent of the parents. The study indicates that to improve student achievement, not only must study habits and skills be addressed, but also responsibility, academic motivation, and student-teacher relations.
