A Guide to Curriculum Development in Mathematics.
Iowa State Dept. of Public Instruction, Des Moines.
This mathematics curriculum guide is to serve as a model and resource to Iowa school personnel as they develop or refine mathematics curriculum. It is based on research about how students learn mathematics and on recommendations from recent reports and studies. The philosophy and eight goals are identified. The second section of the guide concerns the scope, sequence, and strategies for teaching mathematics. Overriding themes are discussed: problem solving; mental computation, estimation, and reasonableness of results; and the use of technology. Comments on teaching mathematics concepts and on each strand in kindergarten through grade 8 are provided. General comments, strategies for three stages of understanding, overriding themes, and needed materials are presented for problem solving, number/numeration/number theory, geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics, ratio/proportion/percent, whole number, computation, decimal fractions, fractions, and integers. The curriculum for grades 9-12 is presented. Descriptions and content topics are given for algebra, analytic geometry, descriptive statistics, discrete mathematics, fifth-year mathematics, general mathematics I and II, geometry, technical mathematics, and trigonometry. Finally, evaluation is discussed briefly. A position paper on basic mathematical skills is appended. (MNS)
