Staff Development Program in Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science Evaluation Report 1985-86. OEA Evaluation Report. Final Report.
Guerrero, Frank; Eisler, Judith
This evaluation focused on staff development activities in mathematics, science, and computer science in New York City schools during 1985-86. Workshops for mathematics teachers and supervisors were designed to help participants implement new curricular mandates. Participants rated the training positively and felt it would be useful and had prepared them to assist peers. Follow-up training provided help in lesson and homework planning and test development; again reactions were positive. Science workshops providing an overview of specific science curricula and teaching and classroom management techniques were rated highly. Eight courses focused on the elementary science curriculum, emphasizing a hands-on, discovery approach. Workshops were also given on new science curricula for high school science supervisors, including training on the evaluation and use of computer software. Most participants considered the training appropriate, but the follow-up requirement was not well understood or not feasible. Use of the Gateway Environmental Study Center was noted, plus provision for hiring science coordinators or laboratory specialists. Workshops on computers, a computer conference on latest trends, and training on computer equipment maintenance were provided, with positive reactions. Five recommendations are included. (MNS)
