Designed to meet legislative requirements of the state of Nevada, the course of study for elementary school students presented in this guide establishes common goals for average students, which are to be adopted and followed by each school district. The course offers a foundation upon which local school districts can build curricula that are responsive to local needs. Standards included in the course concern instruction in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, music, health, physical education, and computer literacy. Each subject area is discussed in three sections. The first section provides a rationale that addresses the value of and need for the subject area. The second section provides an overview of the program which is designed to guide school personnel in the development of courses and curricula. The third section states specific, mandatory objectives for incorporation into elementary school curricula so that they are met by the end of kindergarten and of grades three, six, and eight. Where relevant, a fourth section is added which provides for special features, including unique program characteristics that are important but not required because they are not uniformly appropriate for all districts.
