IMPACT: A Map for Success. A High-Risk Student Retention Plan.
Cellucci, Philomena M. C.; Price, Teresa P.
A project was implemented at Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC) in Florence, South Carolina to develop a retention plan for high-risk and probationary students. The project involved the following components: a literature review on retention strategies, visits to state-of-the-art model two-year college retention programs, studies of FDTC's present and needed resources, and the development of a model for creating an individually guided studies program for high-risk and probationary students. The resulting model focused on the following components: (1) admissions criteria; (2) academic standards; (3) advising; (4) freshman orientation; (5) counseling; (6) the individually guided studies program (IMPACT--standing for Individualizing, Mentoring, Prescribing, Assessing, Counseling, and Tutoring); (7) student assistance in curricula; (8) peer tutoring; and (9) auxiliary services. The project report includes a justification for the recommended reforms in each of these areas based on the literature review and model programs, and statements of goals, objectives, strategies, costs, and benefits. Five IMPACT course outlines are appended, and an Educational Planning Form and 50 references are included. (LAL)
