Exit Level Retesting Results, May 1-2, 1986. Preliminary Report. Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills (TEAMS).
Texas Education Agency, Austin.
The Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills (TEAMS) exit level test was first administered to all eleventh grade students in October 1985. A make-up testing was conducted in January 1986. This report contains the results of the May 1986 retesting of approximately 3,200 11th-grade students who had previously failed to master either the mathematics or English language sections of the exit level test. Additionally, approximately 4,700 students who previously had not taken one or both sections of the test were tested for the first time. The criteria for test mastery for the retest remained the same as the first test. To master each of the objectives a student had to answer correctly three of the four items presented. The results of retesting indicates that the remediation efforts implemented by Texas schools have been effective. Approximately half of the students who had been unable to demonstrate mastery of the basic reading, writing and mathematics skills to obtain a high school diploma a few months earlier were able to pass the tests on their second attempts. Tables following the report show the performance of all students, first time tested students, and retested students in grade 11 grouped according to various demographic characteristics and participation in selected special school programs.
