Cancer Education Program Evaluation: A Responsive Approach to Planning an Evaluation and Initial Results.
Pearsol, James A.
This paper describes evaluation planning for the Cancer Education Program (CEP) at Ohio State University (OSU). The three-year OSU CEP project was designed as a multidisciplinary cancer education program. A responsive method, which trades off some measurement precision in order to increase the usefulness of the findings, was employed in the project. The key components of the OSU CEP were continuation of an ongoing student research assistantship program and development of new cancer education courses. Courses include a self-study module in epidemiology, prevention, and biostatistics; a compact course and mini-module course in nutrition and cancer; and a slide-tape series on head and neck cancer. Four questions were identified as most important in the evaluation: (1) What is the impact of the CEP on students? (2) How does the Student Research Assistantship Program compare to other student research opportunities? (3) To what extent is the CEP a truly multidisciplinary program? (4) What is the match between current cancer education courses and the developing CEP courses? These four questions provided a focus for planning and implementation activities, as well as for reporting instrumentation, data and interpretation. Appendices include a description of the cancer education program at OSU, a rating scale used in the evaluation, and a follow-up evaluation form. (JAZ)
