The ECR 500, a Sound Approach.
Alber, Charles J.
An analysis of phonetics and Chinese character learning done with 1928 character frequency data was reproduced with a more modern data base. The study tabulated the 500 characters of the Elementary Chinese Reader, volumes 1 and 2, and supporting statistics to analyze the characters' phonetics by microcomputer. The objective was to find phonetic clues and patterns to facilitate learning those characters and others in Chinese. Cognates were sorted into categories and rules were formulated for phonetic transformations. The completed analysis revealed a number of phonetic patterns felt to be useful to Chinese language learners and supports the phonetic approach to Chinese reading and writing instruction. The report includes character lists and statistics from the study. (MSE)
