Preventing Sexual Abuse of Persons with Disabilities: A Curriculum for Hearing Impaired, Physically Disabled, Blind and Mentally Retarded Students.
O'Day, Bonnie; And Others
The curriculum on sexual abuse is intended for professionals working with hearing impaired, physically disabled, blind, and mentally retarded students. Introductory material addresses the vulnerability of disabled adolescents to sexual abuse; presents background information on such topics as victims, offenders, reporting abuse, and Minnesota laws about sexual abuse; and briefly examines myths and attitudes regarding the sexuality of disabled persons. Field testing of the curriculum is reviewed, and the importance of parent training on prevention is emphasized. Following a list of teaching guidelines, lesson plans are presented including instructions, exercises, handouts, teacher guides, and notes for teaching hearing impaired, physically disabled, blind, and mentally retarded students. Suggested modifications are offered for younger students. Lessons touch on such topics as reactions and feelings of victims, acquaintance rape, personal safety, and myths and facts about sexual assault. Pre/post attitude tests are included. Appended material includes information on community resources in Minnesota, exercises, handouts, and sample parent letters. (CL)
