Music Techniques with Severely/Profoundly Handicapped Students.
Pedigo, Joyce
This manual describes 18 music-based activities and suggested variations designed for classroom teachers (with little or no musical training) to teach profoundly disabled students more consistent and advanced levels of responding to their environment. Brief suggestions are presented for teacher behaviors, structure of turn-taking, and classroom arrangement as techniques for presentation. Four sections describe activities (often illustrated with photographs) divided into sequential levels of response: awareness (six activities); attending (four activities); imitation (four activities); and self-initiation (three activities). Each section defines the response level, goals of activities for that response level, positive student responses for the response level, teacher approaches for increasing responses, suggestions for using student behaviors to gain responses, and suggested props and materials.
