School board members can be most effective if they are fully aware of their responsibilities, their political situations, and practical methods for maximizing the impact of their actions. This handbook reviews these elements of success in eight chapters. The first chapter advises the board member on how to determine his or her role in relation to the community, other board members, the school district administration, and the law. Chapter 2 looks at the board as a team, notes the importance of controlling conflict, and suggests that board members profile their colleagues in order to understand better the factors motivating them and influencing their thinking. Chapter 3 is devoted to the board's relationship with the superintendent. Techniques for enhancing the productivity of board meetings, including maintaining effective communication, are provided in chapter 4. The fifth chapter examines the process by which decisions are made. Chapter 6 covers the public relations interests of both the individual member and the board. Eight suggestions for dynamic leadership are offered in chapter 7. The final chapter reviews several typical situations that can affect board members positively or negatively. Appendices provide sample forms that board members can use to organize their activities. (PGD)
