A handbook for teachers in small school districts who are faced with the need to include increasing numbers of students with limited English proficiency (LEP) in their regular classroom programs is presented. The handbook is designed to help teachers develop effective strategies to adapt curricula and instructional materials to meet this population's needs. The handbook begins with a discussion of common concerns of teachers, the rewards of teaching LEP students, and survival skills for the first few days of class. Subsequent chapters examine: the characteristics, testing, and language-learning situation of LEP students; issues concerning the LEP student in the regular classroom (orientation, the classroom environment, classroom management, grouping, communication, and cross-cultural understanding); and adapting instruction and materials for LEP students (strategies for adapting instruction, identifying goals and objectives, identifying new concepts and vocabulary, selecting commercial materials and/or preparing simplified reading material, generating reinforcement activities, and selecting methods for teaching reading skills).
