Resource Based Learning. Memorandum No. 64.
Dundee Univ. (Scotland). Coll. of Education.
Resource-based learning is described in this document as a pupil-centered approach to teaching science in which a wide variety of resources are used. Students are given some freedom of pace and choice of activity while teachers provide resources to the student when they are needed. The learning is then based on the resources and the pupil can make as much use of them as his/her abilities and interests dictate. The booklet was developed to assist teachers in: (1) deciding if resource-based learning is feasible for their teaching situation; (2) deciding which model of resource-based learning would best fit their needs (should they decide it is feasible); (3) producing course materials which are organized and manageable; and (4) implementing a resource-based learning program. Included are five case studies from Scottish high schools which use a resource-based approach to learning. Two of the case studies are examples of resource-based approaches to teaching physics, one deals with chemistry, one with biology, and the last one is used in an integrated science course. The appendices include a register of resource-based science courses in Scottish secondary schools and a bibliography. (TW)
