System Design Considerations for Microcomputer Based Instructional Laboratories. Final Report.
Morris, Charles L., Jr.; And Others
This report provides detailed guidelines for configuring a computer based instructional (CBI) laboratory based on the use of Navy/Air Force standard microcomputer hardware and software, some off-the-shelf products, and specialized simulation hardware/software, Navy developed authoring and operating systems, and operational equipment interfaces. The first of four main sections in this report suggests a functional categorization system for CBI and describes the microcomputer hardware and software subsystems needed to satisfy a CBI laboratory requirement. Operating systems, languages, and network options are addressed as component subsystems of a CBI laboratory system. The second section addresses the ways in which a CBI laboratory can be used to support technical training functions including prerequisite skills remediation, independent study, job practice, testing, and refresher training. The third section discusses authoring languages and systems requirements for effective laboratory application and proposes government sponsored development in this area. The last section discusses CBI laboratory system configurations and specifically addresses such technical issues as graphics and simulation that must be considered when selecting a configuration. Several figures are included for illustrative purposes. (DJR)
