English Teaching Profile: Pakistan.
British Council, London (England). English Language and Literature Div.
A review of the status of English language instruction in Pakistan begins with an overview of the role of English in the society in general, and outlines the status of English use and instruction in the educational system at all levels (preprimary, elementary, secondary, higher, vocational, adult, and teacher). Assessments of characteristics and training of English language instructors, the type and availability of instructional materials, educational administration and planning in relation to English teaching, the role of English outside the educational system, British and other international support, commercial opportunities related to English instruction, creative writing, language research, and other sources of information are provided. It is concluded that despite the common use of English in academic and commercial contexts, Pakistan has a substantial lack of exposure to English language teaching in both public and private sectors, with poor teaching conditions, preservice teacher training, materials, and examinations. A minimum of five years is found to be necessary for the discipline of English language teaching to become established. (MSE)
