The Year in the Schools. Handwriting Implementation Project Study, Report #3.
Logan, Lloyd; And Others
Assembled from perceptual data gathered from questionnaires, this report outlines teachers' and administrators' opinions based on their first year's experience teaching handwriting (the Beginner's Alphabet) to first grade children using a new syllabus. Nine supporting tables are included and response statistics are detailed (Appendix 1 contains samples of the actual questionnaires given). Note is taken of the fact that no empirical evidence was used to validate the reported data. The report describes four modes of inservice education and training that were available to the teachers (the first three were also available to school administrators): workshops, publications, advisory teacher consultancy, and school based consultancy. The report also discusses reported teaching method preferences, the nine main teaching difficulties cited by the respondents, and projected difficulties, with a list of requested assistance for 1986. Finally, the teaching of handwriting and the in-service education program are discussed, and concerns raised by regional staff on the program are cited (summaries of the regional reports are provided in appendix 2.) It is concluded that the planned project study was effectively executed and that, though much remains unsettled, some direction regarding further investigation of the new teaching method has been achieved. References are included. (JD)
