Secondary Reading Course Information Exchange: Colleges of Education Respond to State Certification Requirements.
Thompson, Stephen J.
Prepared for college-level secondary reading course instructors and others involved with preservice and inservice teacher education, this paper introduces the Information Exchange as a vehicle for sharing resources in an effort to meet secondary reading certification requirements. A statement outlining these requirements, supplemented by Appendix A, which lists seven national surveys of certification requirements for secondary reading, establishes the need for the exchange. Suggested guidelines for the development of preservice secondary reading courses include the following factors: (1) attitude, knowledge, and skill objectives; (2) well-developed field experiences; and (3) course concepts models. Appendix B gives an annotated list of information sources for the education course on secondary school reading, with information categories parallel to those on the Secondary Reading Course Information Exchange Form: course description, course objectives, assignments, field experience, simulations, modules, audio visuals, and computer software. Appendix C is the Information Exchange Form, which teachers may use to join the Exchange. (JD)
