Supporting Science and Technology in CPVE. A Project Report.
Further Education Unit, London (England).
This report presents findings from a project to gather from pilot Certificate of Pre-Vocational Education (CPVE) programs in Great Britain examples of ways in which teachers had or were intending to approach the Science and Technology objectives. (The CPVE framework consists of 10 core areas, one of which is Science and Technology.) It is intended as an aid to teachers in the planning and delivery of CPVE. Section 1 describes the project. Section 2 provides a rationale for including Science and Technology in the core. It considers how the Science and Technology aims can be interpreted. Section 3 suggests possible strategies for covering the Science and Technology objectives. Constraints are first discussed, since the strategies that are possible depend largely on the constraints. Suggested strategies start with the situation where organizational constraints restrict the range of activities available and proceed to consideration of more open activities, such as assignments and projects. Section 4 discusses examples grouped under the classification of strategies considered in Section 3, namely, timetabled Science and Technology, within wide-coverage assignments, and within major products. Section 5 provides a checklist to assist the teacher in relating to students' needs and CPVE as a whole. (YLB)
