The Environmental Education program of Great Falls Public Schools, which was Montana's state winner in the National Science Teacher Association 1986 Search for Excellence in Science Education, is described in this report. An overview is presented of the district's policies, administrative procedures, staff development plans, and curriculum and instructional activity offerings. The environmental classes and field experiences developed for grades K-12 are explained and summarized. Descriptions are given for units on: (1) animal differences (grade one); (2) fossils (grade two); (3) solid-waste recycling, microscope use, and pond studies (grade three); (4) water, waste water, and rocks (grade four); (5) evergreens, water pollution, noxious weeds, and soil conservation (grade five); (6) a conservation trip and energy alternatives (grade six); (7) ornithology (grade seven); (8) geology (grade nine); and (9) ecology and geology (grades 11-12). Also included in this report is a compilation of letters (14) which testify to the accomplishments and merits of the Great Falls Environmental Education Program. (ML)
