This paper describes a unit in undergraduate Spanish language and cross-cultural training for social workers, which includes both linguistic content and content concerning the cultural and human elements in the social worker's contact situation. The unit consists of: (1) a five-part case history concerning the school placement of a six-year-old Hispanic suspected of having a learning disability showing how a social worker, educational evaluator, school psychologist, and the child's mother work together in the placement process; (2) a series of short texts in intermediate Spanish to acquaint students with Puerto Rican geography, history, politics, economics, and social context; and (3) Puerto Rican songs and poetry. The unit is designed to integrate the linguistic, professional, and cultural elements in a course in Spanish for special purposes intended to train professionals in providing culturally sensitive services to Hispanic youth and families. Several dialogs from the unit are included in the text. (MSE)
