A Feather in the Cap: A Self Contained Classroom for Severely Mentally Handicapped 16-21 Year Old Students in an Urban Middle School.
LeSure, S.
This report, one of a series of case studies on mainstreaming efforts, describes a self-contained class for nine severely mentally and multiply handicapped 16- to 21-year-olds in an urban middle school. Following a description of the physical and social environment is a review of the history of the program begun in 1978-79. The author observes that peer interaction and exposure has been limited. Curricular and scheduling details are noted, as is inclusion of the class in a program featuring industrial arts, home economics, art, physical education and music rotation. Teacher and administrator characteristics are considered. The question of whether the program fits a mainstreaming definition is examined, with limited evidence cited to support the program's success. (CL)
