Integrating Teaching and Testing. A School-Based Staff Development Program for Improving the Quality of Instruction in High Schools. A Planning Guide for Administrators and Lead Teachers. Field Review Copy.
Schalock, Del; Fielding, Glen
This handbook serves as a guide for administrators and lead teachers in a staff development program for improving the quality of instruction in high schools in Oregon. The staff development program is divided into a 2-day basic training program and a 3-day advanced training program. In the first session, participants learn to establish learning goals for units of instruction, design an assessment plan, and develop measures to assess student mastery of the learning outcomes desired. The second session provides guidelines for setting standards for goal mastery, deciding how performance standards are to be applied to slow and fast learning students, and giving feedback to students on test performance that highlights what has and has not been mastered. In the advanced training program, participants review and refine the elements mastered in earlier sessions. Outlines are provided for designing an assessment plan for a course of instruction, linking grading criteria to performance, and reaching departmental and school-wide agreement on grading criteria. Guidelines and work sheets are offered for participant mastery of: (1) using information about student goal attainment in course planning and presentation; and (2) managing goal-based instruction for students working at expected levels of accomplishment, students who need assistance, and high-achieving students.
