Designed to supplement an 8th grade history course with the best updated research on the subject of slavery's origins, the lesson plan described in this paper has several objectives: (1) To augment the secondary textbooks, most of which either do not cover the beginnings of slavery, or cover it adequately; (2) To acquaint students with the historical origins of slavery and its impact especially concerning racism in America; (3) To show that slavery developed gradually while prejudice occurred quickly; (4) To help explain why black Africans were made slaves and the origins of American racism; (5) To argue strongly against slavery and racism; and (6) To make better citizens of students. Also included are notes, suggested and selected bibliographies, and nine pages of lecture-handouts and worksheets. (TRS)
