Matriculation: Profiles of Practices in California Community Colleges. Part III of III.
Kangas, Jon Alan
A study was conducted by the Learning Assessment Retention Consortium of the California Community Colleges to determine the extent to which the state's community colleges had implemented matriculation practices which were recommended by the Board of Governors in 1984, but which had not received state funding. The study investigated college practices with respect to the six components of the Board of Governors matriculation plan (i.e., admissions, orientation, pre-enrollment assessment and educational planning, academic advisement/counseling, student follow-up, and institutional research). Study findings, based on responses from 70 of the 108 colleges, included the following: (1) 94% of the colleges had a computerized system for keeping track of student majors, and 74% had a method for keeping a longitudinal record of a student's performance and progress; (2) about 54% of the colleges had an orientation as part of their admissions process, although many of the colleges were not providing orientations for all new students; (3) 66% required assessment of skills for all new students, and 86% had some form of required or optional special testing for students with possible learning disabilities; (4) 44% provided counseling for all new students, and 66% provided counseling for those who requested it; (5) 83% were able to follow up students on disqualification status, 66% were able to follow up students on probation, and 46% followed up students listed by faculty as being in academic difficulty; and (6) only 27% of the colleges kept track of the matriculation steps a student completed and 30% tracked educational objectives. The study report includes profiles of the matriculation activities of all 70 responding colleges. (RO)
