This resource guide provides results of a survey to validate basic skills competencies with area-specific employers and outlines available resources for each competency. Its intended audience includes the Employment Training Office's basic education instructors and other vocational educators. An introduction summarizes the survey project. The first section is a compilation of results from the basic skills surveys completed by 100 Oahu employers. An overall view is given first, followed by the three specific occupational areas--auto body, auto mechanics, and food preparation and baking, which is divided into separate entry-level positions. Each area includes a list of highlighted competencies followed by a chart of the actual response numbers from the surveys. Competencies are divided into these basic skills areas: writing, listening, reading, speaking, and computing. The second section is a resource listing. A matrix is provided for each competency area. The resources and corresponding bibliography numbers are listed in the column headings; the competencies are listed in the row headings. An individual resource listing follows. A 39-item bibliography provides further information on the resources: title, author(s), location, and type of material. A listing of additional resources and the survey instrument are also provided.
